Terry Melcher died at his home on November 19, 2004, after being diagnosed with melanoma. His wife Terese and son Ryan survived him at the age of 62.
Terry Melcher was an American musician and record producer who was a key figure in the California Sound and folk-rock movements of the 1960s.
Melcher was Doris Day’s sole child; his father was her first husband, Al Jorden, and he was adopted by her third husband, Martin Melcher. Most of his early records were with the Rip Chords and Bruce & Terry, two vocal surf bands.
Melcher met the Beach Boys in the 1960s and later produced several singles for them in the 1980s and 1990s, including “Kokomo” (1988), which was a hit in the United States.
Melcher was tight with the Beach Boys in the 1960s, and he helped Brian Wilson meet with Smile lyricist Van Dyke Parks.
He produced the Byrds’ first two albums, Mr Tambourine Man and Turn! Turn! Turn!, as well as Paul Revere & the Raiders’ and Gentle Soul’s majority of recordings.
