Bates was raised in the United States.

Lawson began to take an interest in music at an early age and by the time he was 7, he started playing the piano, the mandolin when he was 9, and by the age of 11, he began learning to play the guitar.

Bates was 13 when he started his business Lawson’s Lawncare which eventually turned out to be a huge success for the family. About the same time, he was chosen to play basketball in the Junior Olympics for the USA team in Austria.

At the age of 15, Bates wrote his first song.

On June 10, 2013, Lawson released his first album titled Freedom Sure Ain’t Free.

He released his debut single titled I Thought I Had Problems (feat. Rachel Leftwich) on January 28, 2015. From there, he went on to release several other tracks including Like the Rain and The Way I See You.
